Boxing - The Sweet Science
Boxing
While people have fought in hand-to-hand combat since before the dawn of history, the origin of boxing as an organized sport may be its acceptance by the ancient Greeks as an Olympic game in BC 688. Boxing evolved from 16th- and 18th-century prizefights, largely in Great Britain, to the forerunner of modern boxing in the mid-19th century, again initially in Great Britain and later in the United States.

    At the end, when the coach told Ali to block the cross with his right hand, what if the opponent throws a left hook? Wouldn’t he just take a direct hit?

      in the old school cross-armed guard, you would raise the right arm with it horizontally in front of your face so that your right tricep blocked the left hook

      @@bluesytreble1405 Yeah that makes sense, but wouldn’t that expose you to a liver shot? What if the opponent decides to liver hook instead of the head?

      @@GloomyStvnc Much like the philly shell, the left arm is wrapped around your torso, with your left glove over your liver to form a static block. The cross guard is a very defensive guard.

      @@bluesytreble1405 but in this case, the left arm would be in use (because of the jab) so he wouldn’t have the left arm to protect. So isn’t he just prone to a counter punch?

    Da onorare per lo spirito combattivo,la forza e la cattiveria che mettevano nei match....ma i pugili di quell'epoca combattessero contro un pugile di basso livello di 40 anni dopo non sarebbero durati un round.

    Some ppl saying this was roys toughest fight? With a man that was obv payed off to not hurt him? Saw the same thing with that nonce decca heggie and julius francis for the guvnor belt. Makes a mockery of the unlicenced game. Why not let them just fight if their that good? Bc any half decent boxer even 10yrs past prime would wipe the floor with these windmill specialists. When the nonce decca heggie finally fought gary firby and it wasnt rigged he got ko'd in the first round Point proven.....

    There are many pro fighters over the last century and change who were highly skilled, well trained, put fine combinations together and had advanced defensive skills. But there are only a few I've seen whose punches seem to have death in them. Tyson's punches seemed different. Foreman and Shavers also. Joe Louis and Marciano and Dempsey as well. Watching this video of a has-been, fat, middle aged guy less than a decade from death, I see death even in his feints. I'd have hated to be hit by John L!

    I think truly modern boxing didn't really start until the 1920's or so. And you always hear people talk about how guys from earlier days, especially from the turn of the century, would have been beaten badly by modern fighters. And it is probably true, concerning the very beginning of the fight game, just coming out of the bare knuckle days. BUT, how do you think modern guys would have did with these brawlers, fighting under THEIR rules? I think it goes both ways.

    • @mrw1208
      @mrw1208 Рік тому

      Exactly. People developed skills for the rules of the day. Back then feinting a guy out of position and grappling and endurance were the marks of a champion.
